Approaching the Bible

The Bible
Have you ever wondered is the Bible REALLY God's Word? Well, I could just say "Yes it is" if I am a believer, OR I copuld say "No, it is NOT" if I were not a believer. The most important thing for you (the reader) is to have YOU read it, and make up your own mind.
There are many who say it is just a book, written by men. There are many who doubt it's authenticity historically. They question it's content. Call it "myths" and "fairy tales". Then there are those who say it is the VERY Word of (the Living) God.
How can you possibly hope to reach a conclusion of your own with so much conflicting "opinion". Let me give you a few suggestions. (BTW, if you read my profile, you will quickly come to know my position on the matter. But I must add, that I was not always of my current conviction). I have been on both "sides of the fence" if you like.
Initial Approach
This is by far the most critical! Your attitude, when coming to the Book, will determine what you will find in it. I don't mean you have to believe before you start, but looking for fault will reveal fault. Looking with criticism, will find objections. If you think it's confusing, boring, complicated, hard to understand etc, it will give you what you seek. It is a really hard thing to do, but it is possible, to approach it with an open (heart and) mind. For example, if you believe in the Theory of Evolution, and you read thta God created everything (in six days), just read on.Take the information, and store it in your memory. Don't just dismiss it because of a particular, pre-existing bias.
Similarly, when you read that Jesus was born of a virgin, though it's not a common occurence in human reproduction, do the same thing. Just store it in memory, unbiased (as best you can).
Say to yourself, " I come with no preconceptions, and will let IT speak for itself." This one point will make all the difference.
Pray
That sounds a bit strange to some, but hear me out for a moment. It is a Spiritual Book, authored by God Himself (potentially at this moment,- - - remember, you are approaching with an open heart and mind.) It will reveal things to you, the reader, if you are seeking to know the Truth. So, it stands to reason, that you ask Him, ( the Author) to show you what He is saying. In other words, to give you the understanding! (Interpretation, if you like).
The prayer can be as simple as . . . " God, if you really wrote this Book, and it's all about You, show me that it's real". Or. . . "God, help me understand what I read". I can tell you all sorts of stuff, but it's NOTHING, in comparison to what He wants to show you. And if you are genuine, sincere and want to learn, He WILL answer you.
Where to Start?
Many people start to read it like an convetional book. Open the front cover, go to chapter one, and start reading. This might work for some, but mostly not.You need to realise one thing. The Bible is a "book of books", or more accurately, written records of information. Yes they were penned by humans, but the content is "not of this world", in many ways.
There are letters to people, letters to churches, books of poetry, history, visions and dreams, legal documents, instructions in rituals etc. So, it may nopt be so abvious as to the "flow" from one to another (book). The advice of many scolars and teachers is to read the "Gospels" first, (that is, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) followed perhaps by Psalms and so on. There are many options, and good reasons for each, but the key is to start. I like the Gospels for starters, because they "reveal" Jesus Christ" to us. He is the central figure, and the culmination of all the writings of the Book. Without Jesus Christ, ther is NO Christianity.
Let me say that one more time, in case you missed it, "There is NO Christianity, without Him." Someone said that the Old Testament is "Christ concealed" and the New Testament is Christ revealed". It's all about Him. But the most awesome thing is that for Him (Jesus), it's ALL about YOU, (and me).
One Last Thing.
I hope this will inspire you to find out for yourself what the truth about the Bible is. There are numerous books written to aid the study of your Bible, but none of them will do in you what the Bible content can (and will do, if you take it in) do. Countless lives have been changed, both in our lifetimes, and generations past. I have been where you are, and now I am here, but one thing I can safely say, "I would NEVER go back, to what and who I was before. Not because of fear, but because if a living convition within."
God blessyou on your own "journey" of discovery.

Christians come in many shapes and forms. I am of the Catholic shape. But I very much enjoy hearing the Bible read in Church and also reading it for myself. At the moment I am reading the Prophet Jeremiah with the rest of the Catholic world.
Thank you for writing this, and I really liked what you said about being a following of Jesus Christ in your profile. I've been on my "journey of discovery" for many years, and I always love to learn from the perspective of others on a similar journey. Keep up the great work, and thanks again for taking the time to write it.
Thank you aka-dj
I enjoyed this article, well done. The bible is no doubt the inspired word of God. It is much to complex and intricate to be thought up by men. I agree with you when you say pray before reading it. Good advise! If you ask God for wisdom, the bible can be a great learning tool. You and I both know, you can read the bible a thousand times and never stop learning. God will always give you some new nuggets each time you pick the bible up.
What a great approach. Well done.
Awesome hub! I did pray, on the advice of a kind hearted Mormon, and asked God to lead me to the truth, and today I am not a Mormon but saved by Jesus Christ. I had an open mind, and that advice is great aka-dj, it's so easy to judge based on a previous perspective, and so many people use that to outright reject God.
A good friend discipled me, and I was offended when he opened the Bible to help me with my troubles, but I kept going back to him despite my reservations and I came to love the Gospel.
Smireless, thank you for sharing your battle of the bulge. I too fight that fight, and I am so disheartened about how this affects my witness, but God didn't promise us that the road would be easy, and we are serving God despite our failings. I guess this also falls under "going forth weeping, bearing precious seed."
I too do not adhere to any one denomination, they all have their positives and negatives - the important thing being that being a Christian means being saved by Jesus Christ, the Bible is the center for our knowledge. Great hub aka-dj, read and enjoyed some of your comments on the forums.
Keep Carrying the message thank!
I just re-read your article and enjoyed it again. I loved your comment to Ivan the Terrible. You can read and know about a topic but that is not the same as getting involved. If that were the case I would be thin as a rail! I know everything there is about weight loss and healthy eating except how to maintain long term discipline and stay the course. When you skip the rhetoric and get to know the One all the fuss is about you have a different perspective.
I met Jesus Christ when I was ten years old. That was several decades ago. Everything in my life has not gone well but I did not blame God, or society, or anyone but myself. God never promised his followers life would be a bed of roses. In fact it is just the opposite.
Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Good hub.
I've read it, was brought up in it, and studied it for a time, and I've also read Hebrew and Islamic and many other texts. I just don't buy it, though. I believe we do not need to make ourselves feel good by following any religion. There is not great plan out there and we are not a part of anything grand and spectacular apart from how we live our own lives. We can be honest and caring and all those great things armed with the truth, not with the made up stories fed to us by religious leaders. I also find it hard to believe in a book when people who follow it use only the book itself to prove the book's value and worth. Guess that sets us apart, but I did enjoy reading your hub.

Very good hub. Agreeing with Redhawke - nice to see others writing about the truth of God's word.
Blessings.
Living in a world with soo many non believers.....it's nice to see that others are not afraid to write about the good word. On a personal journey myself.....really appreciated this hub!!!
This is a great testimony about finding God. The Truth will be revealed to an honest, open-minded seeker. Doubt is normal, but doubt with desire for truth will receive revelation. We are living in perilous times that were described in II Timothy, but God is still here, still available, and still willing to save! Great hub!

Very good advice ... for anyone, even if they don't believe. Many skeptical former atheists read the Bible to prove it wrong and became believers. (i.e. Josh McDowell, Lee Strobel) That is the power of God's word! Great hub!
